After some harder-than-planned use, the C.A.E.S showed some hull damage and water penetration:
This spot is about amidships. There is another smaller spot further aft. The center, where it looks like the glue joints have pulled away, was troubling. I was wondering if the Tremendous Force and Drastic Measures (remember that?)I used to join the hull and deck were finally pulling the boat apart.
Happily, the damaged fiberglass peeled away easily, and took a thin veneer of wood away with it, as when I re-glassed the O.I. I think/hope that it took most of the brown discoloration with it.
I decided to cut the fiberglass away "neatly", in case the repair shows. I made oval templates and drew lines:
If the repair shows, at least it will look "like a repair" instead of "more damage"This is a problem with Pawlonia. It looks pretty good when undamaged, but it looks like h--- after otherwise sound and waterproof repairs. This is not much more than a layer of fiberglass removed, and some scraping. Every bit of water leaves a horrible black stain, and any repairs look terrible.
I have decided to paint the hull below the waterline, after necessary repairs. what really counts is how the deck looks!
